Drone-Based Arborist System for Automated Tree Pruning
Idea: 230,411
Imagine a drone-based arborist service that makes tree care safer, faster, and more precise. This system would combine advanced drone technology, AI, and a clever mechanical cutting solution to identify, target, and remove dead tree branches — all with minimal human risk and maximum efficiency.
How It Works
- Tree Scanning & Identification
The drone begins by scanning the tree using a combination of LiDAR, RGB cameras, and multispectral imaging. AI algorithms classify the tree species and map out dead or dying branches based on their health signatures. - Targeting Dead Branches
Once the dead branches are identified, the drone flies up and secures a lightweight rope around the target branch. The rope doesn’t need to wrap — it simply needs to hook or anchor to the branch at a predefined point. - Deploying the Cutting Chain
The base station then pulls up a specialized cutting chain, similar to a manual hand chainsaw. The chain wraps loosely around the branch and is connected to two motorized winches at the base station. bidirectional tensioning - Oscillating Cutting Action
The winches alternately pull the chain back and forth, mimicking the action of a manual chainsaw operated by hand. This tension-based oscillation saws through the branch with precision, without requiring spinning blades or heavy cutting tools to be flown by drone. - Controlled Branch Removal
Once the branch is cut, it falls safely to the ground. The base station can reposition to stay clear of the fall zone, while the drone prepares the next branch for cutting. - Post-Cut Cleanup
After pruning is complete, an optional ground rover or collection drone could help gather the fallen limbs for easy disposal or processing.
Benefits
- Increased Safety: No need for humans to climb trees or use bucket trucks.
- Efficient & Precise: AI-guided scanning ensures only the necessary branches are removed.
- Low Power Cutting: The oscillating chain uses minimal energy compared to powered saws.
- Scalable Service: Perfect for residential tree care, utility line clearing, or forestry management.
Future Potential
This system could be expanded with:
- Autonomous cleanup rovers
- Telepresence controls for manual override
- Post-prune health scans for ongoing tree monitoring
This is an idea in development — I’m exploring the mechanical design, drone integration, and software stack that could bring this to life. If you’re interested in collaborating, or offering feedback, contact me!
